Crypto-Related Physical Attacks Surge 169% in Six Months

  • Crypto-related attacks in 2025 have increased 33% compared to last year, with France seeing 14 incidents.
  • High-value targets like Bitcoin holders are increasingly targeted, with a notable case in Canada.
  • Security experts recommend avoiding public asset sharing and securing wallets with self-custody tools.

Violent incidents targeting Bitcoin and cryptocurrency holders have sharply increased, according to recent data tracked by CASA co-founder Jameson Lopp. In the first half of 2025, crypto-related physical attacks surged by 169%, as rising Bitcoin prices have made crypto holders high-value targets for criminals.

Rise in Crypto-Related Attacks in 2025

In the report by Forbes, so far in 2025, 48 violent incidents involving cryptocurrency have been reported. This represents a 33% increase compared to all of 2024. The surge is particularly noticeable since late February, with 35 new cases occurring in just six and a half months. France has seen a disproportionate number of these incidents, with 14 attacks alone in 2025.

The victims of these attacks vary from everyday cryptocurrency holders to executives. The high value of digital assets like Bitcoin has made them inviting targets for criminals. One notable case occurred on September 6 in Cambridge, Canada, where a man was kidnapped at gunpoint and forced to transfer a large sum into a crypto wallet.

High-Profile Incidents Spark Growing Concerns

The threat is becoming more pervasive. In France, criminals have targeted crypto millionaires’ families, including a brutal attack on the father of one such individual. In New York, a tourist was tortured for weeks as attackers attempted to extract Bitcoin credentials. These incidents show the increasing danger that crypto holders face as the value of digital currencies continues to rise.

Despite these disturbing trends, experts point out that self-custody tools and security best practices have also enhanced. Lopp emphasized the importance of staying informed and alert. He stated that the security landscape is constantly evolving, and that crypto holders must keep pace with the latest threats and protective measures.

How to Stay Safe Amid Rising Threats

In a bid to be safe, security specialists recommend that crypto users should not display their possessions. This involves not posting information about the assets publicly on the social media. The self-custody users are expected to also pay attention to securing their wallets both by securing their seed phrases and passphrases, and employing the use of multisig wallets to provide an extra layer of security.

Complex storage systems should not be used at all because they may not be availed when in need. Research indicates that practitioners should take a middle ground, viewing self-custody and delegated custody options and weighing them against the personal risk factor of users. With the increasing risk of violence against crypto holders, it is very important that strong security is applied to decrease the vulnerability.

To sum up, following the tendency of cryptocurrency market expansion, it is possible to highlight that the number of physical attacks increases, which supports the necessity of increased sensitivity to security. Holders will be able to reduce risks and contribute to their safety with the right precautions.
