In a crackdown on cyber criminals, the Irish police arrested 25 people. In a raid, they seized cryptocurrency valued at approximately €6.5 million ($7.1 million) in North County Dublin. This operation was spearheaded by the Garda National Cyber Crime Bureau (GNCCB) and further entailed the seizure of other properties such as cars and watches. The operation was carried out on Monday. Its main focus was unlawful conduct within the darknet, demonstrating the next stage in combating criminals working in the digital realm.

This was conducted by the GNCCB with assistance from the Armed Support Unit and yielded about €6.5.Besides these digital assets, authorities also recovered watches that were valued more than €120, 000 and two luxury cars that were worth up to €220000. The authorities have estimated that the assets were acquired through criminal proceeds, such as money mules and buying from completely anonymous trading sites like the dark web.

Three individuals have been arrested in connection with a criminal group suspected of engaging in money laundering. The arrested individuals include a 23-year-old man, a 49-year-old man, and a 32-year-old woman.

The 23-year-old man is currently in custody and has been charged with assisting criminals under section 72 of the Criminal Justice Act 2006. The 49-year-old man and the 32-year-old woman were arrested for money laundering under section 15 of the Criminal Justice (Money Laundering and Terrorist Financing) Act 2021. They have been released pending legal formalities.

Cybercrime Impacts and Continued Initiatives

Detective Superintendent Michael Mullen of the GNCCB pointed out that it was a well-coordinated process that was explosive in terms of dismantling the darknet criminals. He said that the operation sends a clear message to anybody involved in unlawful activities, especially those who are using technologies such as cryptocurrency.

They described this raid as one of Ireland’s largest operations against cryptocurrency-linked crimes. It underlines how difficult it is to combat digital currencies as tools for organized crime. As the investigation progresses, authorities anticipate taking further action to dismantle the support network for illicit activities conducted through the darknet.
