DOJ Takes Action: $6.3M Crypto Hackers Face Up to 20 Years in Prison

The U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) has recently charged five different people for their participation in a cryptocurrency hacker attack that cost them $6.3 million. The accused are associated with phishing groups, “0ktapus” and “Scattered Spider,” which targeted tech firms and crypto platforms employees; corporate sensitive data and cryptocurrencies were pondered in the case.Removing the email element, hackers had to use phishing messages to obtain some credentials and also to by-pass the two factor authentication. This allowed for gaining unauthorized access to corporate networks they proceeded to steal cryptocurrencies and launch cyber attacks on four countries. If convicted, the defendants are sure to face very stiff punishment of which they can be imprisoned for up to 20 years. Other related perpetrators are being sought.
