Ledger launches new hardware wallet with touchscreen feature, Ledger Flex

Ledger announced the Ledger Flex, a new mid-range hardware wallet priced at $249. The French startup stated the new device includes a secure E Ink touchscreen feature powered by NFC connectivity and Ledger’s Secure proprietary operating system. The company added that the new features will increase security and enhance usability without risking wallets.

Ledger launched Ledger Flex, a new hardware wallet with an E-Link display that allows customers to approve transactions and navigate the interface with a tap. The crypto firm introduced the product during the 2024 Bitcoin conference in Nashville. The new wallet reportedly supports two-factor authentication (2FA) and is compatible with mobile and desktop devices.

Ledger Chairman and CEO Pascal Gauthier stated that the firm’s launch of Ledger Stax and Ledger Flex in 2024 redefines customers’ self-custody experience. He added that Ledger devices store more than 20% of the global digital assets, and the new touchscreen feature would improve the accessibility to enterprises and customers.

“It is the first secure touchscreen; the first time a touchscreen user interface has been driven by a secure element chip, which is crucial for crypto security.

The crypto firm also launched a Ledger Security Key earlier this year. Ledger stated that the new security key is a new app available on Ledger Flex and Ledger Stax. It allows customers to secure their wallets with passkey capabilities and two-factor authentication (2FA).

Ledger mentioned that the app is intended to protect customers’ data, especially in a future dominated by AI challenges such as deep fakes. To address these concerns, the company stated the new touchscreen feature will provide proof of identity and proof of humanity capabilities.

Ian Rogers, Ledger’s Chief Experience Officer, emphasized that user security is not assured without a secure screen. He praised the touch feature on both Ledger Flex and Stax, saying they are fully secure touchscreen devices. He revealed this by stating the screens are battle-tested by Donjon and third parties.

Ledger addresses concerns presented by Ledger Stax

Ledger launched Ledger Stax earlier this year with a curved E-Ink display designed by Tony Fadell, who developed the iPod. The curved display reportedly presented industrial challenges that occasioned delays.

Paul Gauthier mentioned that the curved display on Ledger Stax presented unprecedented mass production challenges. He pointed out that the supply chain attack on the company’s connectKit in December was an isolated incident from the two releases and promised to compensate the phishing attack’s victims.

Ledger announced Stax’s price range of $399, which customers deemed expensive. The company responded to these concerns with the Ledger Flex design, a cheaper version of Stax with a visible difference of a smaller flat E-Ink screen.

According to Ledger, the hardware crypto wallet has a black and steel design. The hardware is available on a 2.8-inch display that enhances visibility. The company added the E Ink feature to improve the device’s battery life, lasting for months after a charge. The new device also includes a USB-C port and NFC capabilities.
