- Kabosu, the Shiba Inu known for the “Doge” meme, has passed away at age 18.
- Dogecoin (DOGE) experienced a rise of 8.13% post Kabosu’s death.
- Kabosu’s image was key to Dogecoin’s branding and humanitarian efforts.
At the age of 18, Kabosu, the adored Shiba Inu whose iconic image gave rise to the widely shared “Doge” meme and spurred the development of Dogecoin, died peacefully on May 24.
Her owner, Atsuko Sato, broke the sad news and expressed her sincere gratitude for all the years of love and support Kabosu had received. A farewell gathering in honour of Kabosu, affectionately known as “Kabo-chan,” is scheduled for May 26 at Flower Kaori in Narita City.
Internet Fame and Meme Culture
Kabosu first gained internet fame in 2010 through Sato’s blog photos, particularly one capturing her sceptical yet curious expression that became the face of the “Doge” meme. This meme quickly gained popularity online, and it was typically met with humorous Comic Sans replies.
The picture of Kabosu was selected as the official insignia of Dogecoin, a cryptocurrency that was first meant to be humorous, back in 2013. Over the years, the well-known digital asset Dogecoin has helped to finance several humanitarian projects, such as campaigns for clean water and the Jamaican bobsled team.
Market Response and Tributes
Tributes celebrating her legacy have flooded social media platforms. Analysts anticipate a mixed market response to her demise; while Dogecoin (DOGE) might witness a temporary dip, sentiments tied to Kabosu could propel a bullish trend, potentially rallying towards the $1 mark.
Kabosu’s influence went beyond the world of cryptocurrencies into the political arena, as demonstrated by her influence on digital campaign tactics used in the reelection of US President Joe Biden.
The market performance of Dogecoin (DOGE) and Shiba Inu (SHIB) has been volatile after Kabosu’s passing. DOGE saw a rise of 8.13% in the last 24 hours and continued to expand by 7.54% in the last seven days.
Kabosu’s enduring influence underscores the profound impact of internet memes in shaping cultural and digital landscapes. Her legacy as the face of Dogecoin symbolises a spirit of community and continues to inspire meme culture worldwide.
