Authorities in Thailand dismantled a large-scale Bitcoin mining operation in Chonburi after uncovering unauthorized electricity usage. Investigators stated that the stolen electricity amounted to hundreds of millions of baht.

Officials Discover Electricity Meter Tampering

Understanding the concept of BTC mining, Bitcoin mining is the process by which transactions are officially entered on the blockchain. It is also the way new Bitcoins are launched into circulation. 

In a recent post on X by Documenting Bitcoin, it is reportedly that Law enforcement officials and power company representatives carried out a raid in the Phanat Nikhom district, where they discovered nearly 1,000 mining machines connected to an illegally modified power meter.

The Crime Suppression Division (CSD) collaborated with the Provincial Electricity Authority (PEA) to investigate irregularities in power consumption. Officials found that the mining operation manipulated its power meter to avoid detection. 

During the day, the meter registered normal electricity usage, but at night, it was bypassed to mine Bitcoin at no cost. The method allowed the operation to avoid raising suspicion while running a high-energy mining facility.

Seizure of Mining Equipment and Ongoing Investigation 

During the raid, officials confiscated 996 Bitcoin mining machines and additional electronic equipment. The exact value of the seized hardware has not been disclosed. Authorities have not identified the individuals or companies behind the illegal operation but are in the process of securing arrest warrants. 

Authorities are tracking down the facility owners while they try to identify the culprits behind massive power theft. The verification of Bitcoin transactions through complex mathematical calculations for Bitcoin mining needs considerably powerful computers. 

Officials detected electrical power abnormalities because of Chonburi’s mining machines, which required excessive electricity consumption. The monitoring activities continue to detect any new unlawful consumption of power resources in cryptocurrency mining operations.
