Vitalik Buterin, the co-founder of Ethereum, has announced Kohaku, a privacy-focused framework designed to enhance the security and privacy of the Ethereum system. Kohaku is a collection of privacy-preserving tools aimed at improving both on-chain privacy and security.
Kohaku’s Modular Framework and Ethereum’s Privacy Upgrade Path
Kohaku offers developers a modular framework, allowing them to build privacy-enhanced wallets without relying on centralized third parties. This open-source suite includes protocols like Railgun and Privacy Pools. Railgun helps users shield their funds, while Privacy Pools offers tools to ensure “proof of innocence” by obscuring financial transactions. The initiative is set to allow developers to create ETH-based applications that prioritize privacy without affecting security.
Ethereum has long acknowledged the need for improved privacy measures, and Buterin has stressed this in recent months. He admitted that ETH has yet to reach its full potential in terms of privacy. Buterin referred to the current state of privacy in the Ethereum network as being in a “last mile stage,” where significant efforts are still needed. With Kohaku, Ethereum aims to offer “real-world privacy and security” for its users, marking a major step forward in blockchain privacy.
Integrating Privacy into Wallets
Kohaku’s main characteristic is the capability for embedding privacy measures directly into popular Ethereum wallets like MetaMask and Rainbow. In a demonstration on November 16, Buterin showed the way a user can employ Railgun to conceal the funds in a wallet that are visible to the public. This is gradually leading to the scenario where the privacy feature in Ethereum wallets is not only availed but also by default through the user’s silent backing.
The Ethereum Foundation, in partnership with Kohaku, is moving privacy research and development to the forefront. The Foundation revealed the Privacy Cluster in October, a whole team whose goal is to ensure that privacy is an inherent feature of Ethereum. The Privacy Cluster consists of a total of 47 individuals which including researchers, engineers, and cryptographers, who are all committed to enhancing the privacy of the platform.
Furthermore, the Foundation has renamed its Privacy & Scaling Explorations team to the Privacy Stewards of Ethereum, which shows a shift in focus towards solving real privacy problems, such as private voting and confidential DeFi. With the launch of Kohaku and increased efforts from the Ethereum Foundation, the push for privacy is becoming central to Ethereum’s future. Kohaku’s development continues, with plans to expand its features, including mixnets for network-level anonymity and ZK-powered browsers.
